Research Awards

The Awards Day will be the Foundation’s key event for the year and will be an opportunity to celebrate research excellence. 

The Foundation will celebrate successful researchers in the 2025 Grant Programs and the following awards: 

  • Professor Lyn Beazley AO Emerging Leader Award

  • Mentorship Award

  • Early Career Publication Award

  • Doreen McCarthy Nursing Research Award

These award categories have been tailored to recognise Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and their mentors. The intention of the awards is to acknowledge ECRs across the East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS), to emphasise that research is seen as a vital aspect of everyday practice and assist them with establishing a track record. Successful award applicants will be announced at the Research Awards Day on 31 October 2025.

Professor Lyn Beazley AO Emerging Leader Award

The Professor Lyn Beazley AO Emerging Leader Award aims to recognise and support ECRs who have demonstrated exceptional promise and dedication in the field of health and medical research.

The award will be open to those within five years of PhD or highest degree award date (taking into consideration any career disruptions as defined in the National Health and Medical Research Council's (NHMRC) Relative to Opportunity Policy), who are undertaking or have conducted health and/or medical research within EMHS during the 2024/2025 Financial Year.

Eligible applications will be assessed on the following criteria:

  • Research Excellence
  • Research Impact
  • Leadership & Collaboration
  • Ambassadorship
The award has been named in honour of RPH Research Foundation’s immediate past Board Chair Professor Lyn Beazley AO, in recognition of her leadership, advocacy of research and commitment to supporting the next generation of researchers.

Award recipient will receive $5,000 and a certificate presented at the RPH Research Foundation Awards Day. It is our intention that this award will not only provide deserving early career researchers with additional support, but also enhance their future prospects when applying for grant funding at both state and national levels.

Mentorship Award

This award was established in recognition of the essential role mentorship plays in supporting ECRs. The Mentorship Award recognises senior health and medical researchers who demonstrate a strong commitment to developing the next generation of researchers.

ECRs working within EMHS are invited to nominate their supervisor for this annual award.

The award recipient will receive $5,000 and a certificate presented at the RPH Research Foundation Awards Day.

Early Career Publication Award

This award was established to recognise ECRs who are publishing their work and acknowledge researchers working across EMHS to ensure that research is seen as a vital aspect of everyday practice. This award aims to encourage ECRs on their research publication journey.

We invite early career researchers who have published health and/or medical research connected to EMHS during the 2024/2025 Financial Year (i.e. from 01 July 2024 to 30 June 2025) to submit an application for this award.

The award recipient will receive $5,000 and a certificate presented at the RPH Research Foundation Awards Day.

Doreen McCarthy Nursing Research Award

At the RPH Research Foundation, we believe in the transformative power of nursing research. We are dedicated to fostering innovation and excellence in nursing practice within EMHS. This award recognises nurses within EMHS who are conducting research to improve patient outcomes and enhance healthcare. This award will be presented to the top-ranked Coordinating Principal Investigator for a nursing project submitted to the RPH Research Foundation’s 2025 Nursing and Allied Health Grant Program.

The 2025 Doreen McCarthy Nursing Research Recipient will be announced at the Research Awards Day.

The winner will receive an additional $5,000 in funding, giving the Doreen McCarthy Nursing Research grant a total value of $20,000 as the highest-ranked nursing project.

Professor Doreen McCarthy AM, former Director of Nursing at Royal Perth Hospital, was a champion for nursing research and instigated many initiatives aimed at promoting nurses as researchers and research into nursing practice. Doreen went on to be the founding Dean of Nursing at The University of Notre Dame Australia's School of Nursing & Midwifery in Fremantle.
