Professor Markus Schlaich shares top spot in Premier’s Science Awards

RPH Research Foundation’s Dobney Chair in Clinical Research, Professor Markus Schlaich, has been announced as the joint Scientist of the Year in the Premier’s Science Awards 2024.

The $50,000 prize will be shared between John Curtin Distinguished Professor Sharon Parker from Curtin University, and Professor Markus Schlaich from The University of Western Australia, Royal Perth Hospital and RPH Research Foundation.

As Chair of Hypertension Australia and Co-Chair of the recently established National Hypertension Taskforce, Professor Schlaich leads the nation in controlling the leading global risk factor for death. With more than 500 publications and 20 national/international awards, his translational clinical research has resulted in recent regulatory approval of several novel blood pressure lowering therapies including a new drug class and a revolutionary interventional approach to treat hypertension.

Applications came from across all fields of science, including natural, medical, applied and technological science, engineering and mathematics.

Winners were selected by panels of expert judges who oversaw the assessment process.
