Keep your Pressure Down
In the lead-up to World Hypertension Day, RPH Research Foundation’s Dobney Chair in Clinical Research Professor Markus Schlaich gave a presentation at the City of Perth Library.
Raised blood pressure (BP), or hypertension, is the single biggest risk factor responsible for mortality worldwide. It is estimated that in Australia alone, 34.6% of the population has raised blood pressure, putting them at risk of some serious long-term complications if left untreated.
Professor Schlaich presented on “Keep your Pressure Down” sharing research into detecting, managing, and controlling blood pressure.
The good news is that BP is easy and inexpensive to measure, and if diagnosed early enough can be managed by maintaining a healthy lifestyle or, if required, through the use of effective drug treatments that are available to control hypertension.
After the presentation, the Dobney Hypertension team performed free blood pressure checks, helping 67 people know and understand their blood pressure numbers as part of May Measurement Month.
Watch the recording below to learn more about keeping your pressure down.
You can also have your blood pressure checked for FREE during May Measurement Month.
Royal Perth Hospital will, once again, have a blood pressure screening booth where anyone can get their blood pressure measured for FREE.
May Measurement Month 2024 (MMM24) is a vital, global public health initiative that screens millions of people around the world for hypertension. When you consider that more than half of all Australians with high blood pressure are unaware of their condition, it is high time for all of us to roll up our sleeves and get checked!
You will find the blood pressure measuring booth on the level 3 Bridge, so come along and get a free blood pressure check on:
Thursday 16th May – Friday 17th May between 10am – 1pm
For those who can’t join us in person, why not measure yourself at home. Supporting information and videos on how to take your BP at home can be found here www.maymeasure.org/mmm-self-test/
