40 Years of Funding Medical Research
This year marks a momentous occasion for RPH Research Foundation as we celebrate our 40th anniversary. Since our inception in 1983, we have been dedicated to funding ground-breaking medical research that has helped improve patient outcomes and transformed healthcare.
Over the past four decades, we have funded some of the greatest minds in Western Australia at different stages in their career to unlock new discoveries. This has included seed funding for Nobel Prize Laureates Dr Robin Warren AC and Professor Barry Marshall AC as they discovered bacterium Helicobacter pylori and revolutionised the treatment of stomach ulcers, thereby transforming our understanding of ulcers and the lives of millions around the world.
Our past support has also assisted Professor Fiona Wood AM in her world-leading burns research which led to the development of spray-on-skin that helped save the lives of victims of the Bali bombings in 2002.
From small beginnings, we now routinely distribute over $2m per annum in grants, across a variety of medical fields including cancer, heart disease and infectious diseases through, and in-kind support through our research facility on the Royal Perth Hospital campus.
In 2023, some of the research projects we are supporting include:
- Undertaking and assessing the impact of a physical activity program for older Noongar people of the Southwest of WA that is designed to reduce the incidence of falls and ensure healthy aging.
- Investigating sepsis comprehension in the context of Emergency Departments.
- A world-first research project that is exploring how novel glucose-lowering drugs may prevent blindness and induce kidney health in people living with diabetes.
- Tissue Engineering on wounds that won’t heal using a combination of 3D scanning, 3D printing and stem cell therapy to help treat complex wounds.
Our supporters have played a crucial role in helping us fund this vital research, and we are grateful for the generous support of people like you who continue to donate. As we look ahead to the future, we are excited to continue funding innovative research that has the potential to make a real difference in people’s lives, and we are proud to have reached this milestone anniversary.
Supporting life-changing research is at the heart of everything we do. This research is at the forefront of novel, emerging medical practices and improved patient care.
With you by our side, today’s research is tomorrow’s treatment.
