Research Overview
The original Fitness for the Ageing Brain Study (FABS) was conducted in Perth during early 2000s. This study was an 18 month intervention in which half of the participants underwent a home-based exercise program.
The study was one of the first randomised controlled trials to show that exercise can have a significant positive impact on cognition in adults at risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Some 15-17 years later we were able, with funding from the Royal Perth Hospital Medical Research Foundation to follow-up these participants to see if there were long-term effects of the exercise program. These results are currently being compiled.
